Artist's Statement

REFLECTING

I think I bring an unusual perspective, and certainly history, to my artistic expressions. My father was a critical influence on my journey. He was was a productive artist all his life, also taught art at the graduate level, and was never interested in any other profession. At his university, I was thus able to access and utilize numerous mediums, from photography to arc welding, potting to paper mache.

Although numerous influences are at work, my father's preferred style of art, especially painting, was an influence. My digital images all derive from my photography, which is a consistent and regular part of most every day. Images seen from a certain perspective must be captured, regardless of the fence I must climb or the road I have to pull off of. 

​

But I find myself increasingly drawn to the abstract, an image devoid of recognizable form. Only patterns and colors to capture the eye and the mind. No emotional, knee-jerk, preconceived reactions to alter your visceral response.

​

Let me take this opportunity to offer up a phrase, a mantra of sorts, which describes a conundrum we all face in life, as we search for meaning in existence. Is the world heading toward disorder? Alternatively, are things falling into place, into some semblance of order? Or is their beauty and some form of symmetry in chaos? I am of the mindset "chaos is in order!"
